Another day, another project! Jon helped Gary install our new "electricity protection system". I don't know the real name for it but I think mine is descriptive enough!
Apollo and Lady were still enjoying the extra freedom they had and ventured quite a bit about the property and the neighbors property as well. It was really hard for Apollo to stay out of the pond!
I stood at the front of Wes and Nancie's property to take this picture. You can see how far off the road their house sits and all the nice trees and grassy area that surround it. Wes has a riding lawnmower to help him keep it under control.
We traveled in to Kansas City to visit the National WWI Museum. It is across the street or "up" from the Union Train Station. I know I came in by train to visit Uncle Harry and Aunt Jessie during a blizzard as it was white out conditions from the train to their house!
We were here to visit the museum and the 'boys' patiently waited for us while we took pictures from above.
The museum was wonderful. It explained how everything fell into place within the world stage and who did what when and why they got involved in the conflict. Does that make sense? This map was one of the displays that helped explain the order that things happened.
Wes was looking at a display on the opposite side of the one I was looking at. If you were to try to read all the information available in these exhibits you would be here for HOURS! The details and the amount of authentic articles was mind boggling. Considering all the technology we have now it is amazing how much they were able to preserve from almost 100 years ago. 100 years, wow.
The efforts of all the nations involved was remarkable. Of course we are familiar with the Uncle Sam poster, but there were many, many more that were made to enlist support and supplies and monies.
After the museum we dropped Jon off at home and went out for Mexican food!!! Poor Jon had an upset stomach all day and the thought of food was not pleasant for him or he would have joined us. We had pretty much stuffed ourselves and already packed our 'take home' boxes when I took this picture. We were in Olathe so after the meal Nancie & Wes showed us where they first lived and also the places where Nancie went to school and where some of her friends lived.
On the way out of town we went by the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm. The Santa Fe Trail went through here and this was part of the National Historic Trail. It would be an interesting place to visit when we come here next time!
Back at home we decided to sit outside on our 'patio' and visit for awhile. The weather was a little more conducive to staying outside tonight. At least it was nice until the bugs started to bite. Wes and Gary headed inside first and Nancie and I joined them a short time later.
Jon was feeling a little better, thank goodness. We spent a little more time visiting before we had to say goodbye. Jon, Nancie & Wes all need to work tomorrow. We enjoyed spending time with them and hope we can meet again - maybe they will come to California and Nevada for a visit. Time will tell. Anyway, they needed to go to bed and I wanted to get these pictures on the blog so I could go to bed. It's 'westward, ho' for us again tomorrow. Our conestoga wagon is a little more equipped than the travelers who came through here on the Oregon, Santa Fe and California Trails. I don't think we can complain about our little inconveniences - they are small in comparison to the pioneers. We are blessed!
