Thur - Border Patrol and Beyond

The wind has died down but the weather is a little cool.  Last night it was about 28-29 degrees and today it didn't get much warmer than 64.  That's okay.  I checked the weather forecast for Yuma, AZ where we are heading and they have 80+ degrees listed for the next several days.
The campground we were staying at, Tombstone Territorial RV Resort, has activities planned throughout the winter months and today they had agents from the US Border Patrol come in to make a presentation.  We decided not to leave the camp until afterwe heard them speak.

Three agents came to make the presentation and they had videos and slides to describe their duties as well as stories from their experiences and data about the local region.

Since Gary and I had seen the fences used at the border when we passed through El Paso we were interested in all the types of fences that are used.  I guess that the fences range from simple barbed wire to elaborate fences of steel.  The newer fences have been put up in the last ten years after the Border Patrol became part of the Homeland Security Department.  It seems that their training and job expections are pretty close to that of someone in the US Armed Forces.

The agents are assigned the Mexican border units when they first come in to service for the US and get extra training here before they have a chance to move to a different location.  The age minimum is 18 and the maximum is usually about 40.  It sounded really interesting and we were thinking it might be something Mark would enjoy as a new job.  He had worked for the TSA for awhile and had talked about going through a police academy.  I think this would be a combination of the two!

We left Tombstone about Noon today and headed west on I-10.  After filling up with fuel in Eloy, AZ (between Tucson & Phoenix) we decided to just stay at the truck stop for the night.  We will head into Yuma tomorrow and stay for 3 or 4 days before going to Pahrump for our Nevada Samboree.  Gary's birthday is tomorrow and I think his present will be to have someone wash and wax the RV while we are in Yuma!!  While in Yuma we will contact Nancy & Max, two friends from our Copper Hills Good Sams who are south for the winter.  They have been to Yuma quite a few times and should be able to tell us about any special sights we should see.  Otherwise we will just relax as the Samboree followed by the Good Sam Rally in Phoenix will be quite busy!
