We're Not in Texas Anymore!

We left our truckstop in Fort Stockton fairly early this morning and headed toward New Mexico. We thought maybe we could visit some of the chile fields or chile producing areas while there. Most of the landscape in the southwest of Texas looked pretty much like our drives through central Nevada - dry and barren. We did need to drive through another border patrol today but I missed taking a picture of all the xray type equipment that line the roadway as you approach the officers. We didn't even need to stop as the officer just waved us through.

I was able to talk to my brother, Dave, and my Mom this morning and found out that Dad is doing great. A little later I also talked to my sister, Lynn and she was really excited about how well he was doing. In the middle of our conversation she looked up and saw Dad coming her way in a wheelchair - he was being released from the hospital!! We had to say good-bye but it was for a very good reason so I had to let Lynn go take Dad & Mom home. Woo-hoo!!

Although we were pretty close to the Mexican border for much of our drive it wasn't until we reached El Paso that we really saw the border town. This picture isn't very clear but all the buildings you can see are in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

This picture and the ones following it let you see the fence that is at the border. We did not get off the interstate so I am not sure how high it is but Gary thought it was probably 20 to 30 feet high.

When we reached New Mexico (only a few miles from El Paso) we stopped at the Visitor Information Center to find out a little more about Deming. What we learned was that the chile capital was actually Hatch, NM, about 50 miles off the interstate. They also told us that we would not find much activity this time of year as the harvest time was in August. That burst our bubble ..... oh well, we will still stay the night in Deming and go on to Arizona tomorrow.

In Deming we found a K-Mart right next to a Wal-Mart so we decided to stay in the K-Mart parking area for the night. (We checked with the management for permission) A couple from Quebec, Canada are staying in their RoadTrek right next to us. I spent a few minutes talking with the woman who did her best to understand and speak English. She translated what we talked about to her husband and we managed to get quite a bit discussed!

After getting our supplies bought at the two stores Gary and I played a little cribbage and had dinner in the RV. Now it is time to relax!
