Monday - We Overshot Our Goal!!!

The day started a little slow. We were camped behind a Camping World store so we walked there to see if we could get the part we needed for our refrigerator. Our part needs to be special ordered (7-10 days) so we decided to order it from the Camping World closest to Houston and we will pick it up after visiting Deb and Manny. We can live without the ice maker until after the Mardi Gras!

Our camp was not much to write about, but at least we had a chance to dump our grey water and fill up with fresh water. Using their electricity instead of our diesel and propane was nice, too! In this picture the hills in the background are in Mexico.

As we went through El Paso we were REALLY close to the border. We could see the fence that is used to separate the US from Mexico. The homes you see in the background are pretty skimpy. It seems different to be so close to the border that is always in the news.

We started at mile marker 1 and traveled to mile marker 372 today. We had originally planned on stopping in Ft. Stockton but the Walmart there was really small and not much room to squeeze in next to the 3 or 4 rigs already there. We decided to travel further down the road. The rest stops in Texas are not as big as those in Nevada or California. The one we thought about staying at for the night did not seem to be a good choice – so on we traveled!

The scenery most of the day was high desert and low mountains or plateaus. There were not too many places to stop along the way.

We did have to go through a US Border Patrol …. There were a lot of “gun” type apparatus on both sides of the road pointed at the vehicles as we slowly drove by. I think they had technology that could tell if we had more than two people in our RV as we did not have to actually come to a stop when we reached the officers. (They had double glass to stand behind and all carried weapons.)

The speed limit was 80 mph and many vehicles passed us by as we kept our speed between 55 and 60.

It’s starting to get dark but there wasn’t a place to stop.

It is dark now but we have a ways to go. We ended up parking next to a Super 8 Motel for the night. The restaurant next door got our business as we were not excited about cooking after the long miles today. Hopefully we can tag on to the internet at the motel. If this gets posted on Monday night we were successful! If not, we will try again on Tuesday.

Well, it's Tuesday now and we stopped at a McDonald's in Junction, TX to use their internet. It seems like a really nice town and there is a branch of Texas Tech University here, too. We found out from a local couple that the route we have planned for today will take us through some German towns - maybe we can find a German restaurant for lunch!
