We stayed on country roads for the majority of the drive today. This bridge was crossing the Illinois River. The river was pretty muddy because of all the rain we have been having.
This was a typical town that we drove through today. Most of them still had their flags on display. Some looked a little more prosperous than others as the bad economy had left many with shuttered windows and doors.
We drove through miles and miles of cornfields - and more cornfields after that! Gary and I were trying to think of some jokes about corn, but we weren't very good at making them up. Of course, a familiar sight in the midwest is the windmill farms. We have also seen many pieces of windmills being driven across the interstate system. Some parts of the country are getting smart about usinga "greener" approach to their electricity needs.
Since we were on country roads instead of interstates there were no "rest stops", however there were occasional picnic areas along the side of the road. We decided to stop and have our lunch here and give the dogs a little walk. The temperature today was about 87 degrees but with the humidity the the heat index was between 97 and 103 degrees! A sauna might have felt cooler!
We crossed into Indiana and stopped at a Walmart in Brownsburg, about 15 miles west of Indianapolis. We did a little shopping, fixed dinner and stayed outside in the shade to try to keep cool. The fireflies started to appear - had not seen any since Saturday because of all the rain. About 10 pm Eastern time we had had enough heat and decided to get some more fuel so we could run our generator and turn on our air-conditioner. I don't think we would have been able to sleep without it. I am writing this last bit as we travel down the road to look for the Flying J truck stop. We'll fill the tanks, find a place to park, turn on the generator and the AC and go to bed!
